Elon Musk’s much-anticipated discussion with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on his platform, X, faced significant technical difficulties. The highly awaited conversation, which covered topics such as immigration and inflation, was delayed by over 40 minutes due to widespread access issues.
Although the event was promoted as an interview, Trump made several unsubstantiated claims that went unchallenged. Musk reiterated his support for Trump, who is facing a renewed challenge from Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming November election. Musk attributed the technical problems to a cyber-attack, though some experts were skeptical of this explanation.
As Trump seeks to revitalize his re-election campaign, opinion polls indicate a tightening race with Harris, the Democratic nominee. Musk, who wields considerable influence in political circles, has over 190 million followers on X and is known for his frequent engagement in political debates. He has also recently become involved in a political committee supporting Trump.
During the conversation, topics ranged from a recent assassination attempt on Trump to his proposal for a US missile defense system similar to Israel's Iron Dome. Trump also discussed potential plans to close the federal Department of Education and shift its responsibilities to the states. He characterized President Biden’s withdrawal from the race as a “coup,” a claim Biden addressed by citing concerns about intraparty distractions.
The discussion between Musk and Trump was friendly, in contrast to their past contentious exchanges. Trump, who has previously criticized electric vehicles, praised Tesla, Musk’s company, and acknowledged his support for EVs due to Musk’s endorsement. Musk offered to assist a potential Trump administration with a proposed “government efficiency commission.”
After the event, Musk invited Vice President Harris to participate in a similar discussion on X. The Harris campaign responded critically, labeling Musk and Trump as “self-obsessed rich guys” who mishandled a livestream in 2024.
Trump’s conversation with Musk, which experienced technical difficulties similar to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis' campaign launch on X in May 2023, also drew attention to ongoing regulatory scrutiny from the European Union regarding X’s compliance with digital content laws.
Trump’s reactivation on X, after being banned following the January 6 Capitol riot, has been limited. Despite recent campaign activity on his account, it remains uncertain whether he will increase his presence on the platform.
